Nearly 8,000 tribal migrants took part in a Mass concelebrated by Cardinal Oswald Gracias on 27 Oct. 2013 at St Teresa’s School ground. Besides Cardinal Gracias, Bishop Angelo Gracias, Bishop Savio Fernandes, Bishop John Rodrigues and priests took part in the Mass.

Cardinal Gracias celebrated Christmas with 5 Migrant Tribal families, victims of the Cuffe Parade fire. He gave each family a cheque for Rs. 40,000/-.  The whole relief and rehabilitation of the fire victims was carried out by Seva Niketan as part of the ChotaNagpur Migrant Tribal Development (CMTD) under the director, Fr. Paul Vaz.

On Sunday 11th May 2014, a Joint Tribal wedding Ceremony “Samuhik Vivaha” of 14 couples was held at St. Stanislaus School  grounds from 5pm to 10:30pm.

The whole event was organized by the Chotanagpur Migrant Tribal Development Network (CMTD) coordinated by Fr. Paul Vaz,S.J.,and Alka Prema Lakra, Seva Niketan, Byculla. Around 2500 people  attended this Mass Marriage ceremony.

Bishop Agnelo Gracias, of the Archdiocese of Bombay blessed the nuptials together with Fr.James Mascarenhas,Fr.Vincent Vaz, Fr. George Rosario, Fr. Simon D”souza,SJs Fr.Jackie SSS,Fr. Leos Ekka OFM,Fr. Jerome and Fr. Lugun SVDs,Deacon Tony Francis and Deacon Vinay KantelaSJ.

This event is aimed towards making these couples aware that marriage is sacred and a one time commitment.

Many of these male Tribals work as construction workers, in offices, as drivers, security men, and women as domestic workers..The Joint marriages is to enable them to share the costs ...which makes it affordable for them..They are also given  gifts from the sponsors like house hold articles to begin their life...

The experience of 24 Couples last year is" a sense of social dignity and acknowledgement by society through an institutional marriage..." This is the upliftment of Tribals which CMTD is making them see beyond their humdrum and wretched lives, besides empowering them to get their identity cards, fighting exploitation etc..

The CMTD. is a network of 11 centres spread throughout the city from Cuff Parade to Borivli and NaviMumbai and caters to about 10,000 tribals. It runs 10 projects like the Chotanagpur Premiere Hockey Tournament run by the St. Stanislaus Hockey Festival.. Others are a Unique Insurance Scheme for Migrant Tribals , “Banking for the Unbanked”  in coordination with Xavier Institute of Management and Research, St. Xavier’s College Campus, for those at the Bottom of the Pyramid...

After the marriages in keeping with their culture they had the tribal dances in community circles to the beat of the drums...and then a bada khanna..
